Legal services
One of the most tangible safeguards of members’ interests is day-to-day employment relationship advice and help in problematic situations. First, a member is directed to speak with the Akava shop steward or contact person at the workplace. If there is no one, the union’s employment contract lawyers can negotiate with the employer. Our lawyers have a sound grasp of collective agreements, and they are thoroughly familiar with the constantly changing legislation that affects working life.
It does not always have to be a problem-related issue. The union provides information on matters concerning employment contracts, collective agreements and labour legislation.
You can also contact the union office for legal aid. To get legal aid, the grounds for the dispute or charge must have arisen during your period of membership and your membership fee payments must be up to date.
Akava Special Branches has taken out liability and legal expense insurance for the safety and security of its members. To receive compensation, you must have been a member of the union for at least ten months before the damage occurred and your membership fee payments must be up to date. If your membership has lasted for less than two years, the grounds for the dispute or charge must have arisen during your period of membership.
